Voter ID
The government introduced compulsory photographic voter ID in 2022. This has been widely speculated to be an attempt at voter suppresion, due to the demographics of people without valid ID
You will be turned away from polling stations if you don't have valid ID
Your ID must match the name on the electoral roll. If it doesn't, you can either get updated ID, or bring proof of your name change (eg a deed poll) when you vote
For the purposes of voting, valid ID includes:
- UK passport,
- UK driving licence,
- PASS Proof of Age ID Card (eg a CitizenCard),
- Blue Badge,
- Older person's or Disabled person's bus/Oyster pass,
- Voter Authority Certificate
A full list of valid ID can be found at the Electoral Commission
Note that student & veteran cards are not considered valid ID
If you don't have valid ID, you can either switch to postal votes (which don't require ID), or apply for a Voter Authority Certificate (free, not suitable for NI voters)
A Voter Authority Certificate is not valid in Northern Ireland. Instead you can apply for a Electoral Identity Card
